Whole Foods Market Westchase (WFMW) recently opened at our Westchase Shopping Center, located at Westheimer Road at Wilcrest Drive in Houston, TX. I had the opportunity to attend their private media tour/sneak peek and their grand opening to learn and experience everything their new store has to offer.
WFMW relocated from another Weingarten shopping center across the street. The store originally opened in 1991 and was Whole Foods’ tenth oldest store. The relocation offered WFMW the ability to enhance their customer shopping experience with a new, larger, state-of-the-art store.
During the media tour, Whole Foods’ Lauren Tally shared, “The great thing about moving across the street is we have been able to listen to the community and what their wants are and deliver on their wants with the increased square footage we have at our new Westchase location.”
At the new store, customers can find a larger frozen foods section, an expanded floral department, a tripled wine selection, and a large selection of ready-to-eat and made-to-order food with indoor/outdoor seating to serve the strong daytime population. There is also a new bulk section, which includes nuts, grains, flours, pastas, trail mixes, nut butters, dried fruits and more.
During the media sneak peek I learned about some of the amazing products and programs that WFM Westchase has to offer. Below are five of my favorites.
WFM takes pride in finding the best locally grown, raised and produced items to offer their customers. WFM Westchase identifies their local products with a blue location marker (pictured right). I purchased the local peaches from McPeak Farms in Pittsburg, Texas, and they were absolutely fresh and amazing.
Local Producer Loan Program
WFM is bestowing up to $25 million in low-interest loans for local independent farmers and food artisans to get their products into stores and in the homes of their neighbors and communities.
The Cheese Monger Section
I love trying new cheeses, and I think WFM is now the place to do that because of their well-trained cheese mongers who can make knowledgeable recommendations. WFM not only trains their associates at other WFM locations before opening a new store, they also require cheese mongers to become Certified Cheese ProfessionalsTM. A cheese monger helped me pick out cheeses at the sneak peek, and I loved every single selection.
Blueberry Maple Sausage
As part of the media tour, the host called out some of her favorite items, including Blueberry Maple Sausage, which she referred to as a “MUST HAVE.” I purchased some at the sneak peek and cooked breakfast for dinner that night. It was a huge hit with my entire family. WFMW has 26 flavors of sausage in their selection.
Everyone who knows me knows I love anything truffle. During the sneak peek, a WFMW Cheese Monger recommended this truffle honey to pour over an English Cheddar Cheese. I also paired the truffle honey with organic plain cashews and fresh local peaches. I served it at a party, and it was a crowd favorite.
At the grand opening on June 1st, a long line of customers filled the sidewalks outside of Westchase Shopping Center to take part in special promotions and check-out the new WFMW store. Guest speakers Mark Dixon (WFM Southwest Region President) and Jim Murphy (State Representative representing District 133 in west Houston) kicked off the ceremony, which ended with a traditional bread-breaking (an edible ribbon-cutting) to commemorate the grand opening.
Many of our Weingarten associates who have worked on this project over the past several years were in attendance for the ceremony.
The Weingarten Realty team has truly enjoyed working with WFMW on their new store, and we are pleased they chose to relocate to Westchase Shopping Center and expand their Westchase operations. We look forward to their continued success providing the finest natural and organic foods available to the Westchase District and surrounding communities.
