The success of Weingarten is contingent upon the successes of our associates, so we strive to create a supportive environment that benefits our associates both professionally and personally. One major component of this effort is our Wellness Program.
Our Wellness Program is designed to encourage associates to be more mindful of their overall health and well-being. Participants earn points by documenting their successes in seven weighted categories.
At the end of the annual program, associates receive gift cards and other rewards based on how many points they’ve each accumulated.
The program encourages active participation in many facets of a well-balanced life and provides educational resources, wellness seminars, cooking classes, body measurement equipment, friendly competitions, charitable/volunteer opportunities and more. Weingarten also provides associates in our Houston office with locker rooms, an exercise room with a television for exercise videos, and a storage room for yoga mats, weights, foam rollers, and other exercise equipment.
This week the exercise room transformed into a mobile blood clinic through Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. Associates who donated blood received wellness points in the charitable events category. Associates are also currently participating in a four-week challenge called “A New Weigh of Life,”which educates them on healthy habits and nutrition in order to reduce unwanted weight.
Company wellness programs in the U.S. continue to gain popularity among employers and job-seekers alike –with good reason. As Kimberly Lankford writes in Kiplinger, “For employers, the benefit of wellness programs is clear: Helping employees get healthy can ultimately reduce insurance claims and boost productivity.” They also improve morale and reduce associate stress, turnover, and absenteeism.
Here at Weingarten, associates benefit from friendly competitions that encourage them and help hold them accountable. The competitions also help build camaraderie throughout the company, and wellness events facilitate interactions between associates from different departments that might never otherwise meet face to face. The program helps maintain a more connected community environment at Weingarten.
Also helping maintain our community is our new Wellness Program website, which we created in-house and are currently beta testing.
Built like a social media site, associates register online and create a profile in order to track their activities and points earned. Associates can “friend” each other, create groups (like the weekly lunchtime yoga class), and comment on each other’s activities.
From the body weight scale in the HR copy room to the brand new website to this week’s blood drive, the Weingarten Wellness Program is designed to improve associate well-being in numerous ways. The Company offers rebates on Fitbits, hosts on-site flu shots and mammograms through M.D. Anderson, facilitates exercise during lunch and after work, encourages and enables charitable and volunteer opportunities, and so much more.
