It was with great pleasure we partnered with IREM® to pursue the IREM® Certified Sustainable Property. It is our hope that this initiative will demonstrate how achievable this certification is and enable companies in our industry to complement their business strategies with sustainable practices.
Shopping centers—especially existing properties—have been underrepresented in green building certifications such as LEED for Existing Buildings. IREM’s certification provides this property type with a viable path to recognition for resource efficiency and environmental programs. The attainable, affordable certification is also available for office properties and multifamily communities.
Weingarten plans to count the certification in their 2016 GRESB submission. GreenForward, GRESB, and now the IREM Certified Sustainable Property® certification complement one another to allow us to demonstrate a commitment to owning and operating high-quality assets and achieving long-term value for our shareholders.

Situated in a trade area bounded by four major freeways, this center benefits from excellent exposure to over 60,000 cars daily. Centerwood Plaza has embraced sustainability by implementing various measures throughout the past several years. These measures include, but are not limited to native landscaping, energy efficient lighting, energy efficient roofing, tenant recycling programs, and environmentally-friendly construction build-out procedures.
About IREM® Certified Sustainable Property Certification
The IREM® sustainability certification assesses the sustainability performance of existing properties in five categories – energy, water, health, recycling, and purchasing. Thousands of existing office, multifamily, and retail properties in the United States are working toward sustainability goals but cannot get LEED certification. It’s too far out of reach and does not make financial sense. The IREM® Certified Sustainable Property is much more customized to property managers – whereas LEED’s requirements are often out of a property manager’s control. Many properties have successful sustainability programs but no way to validate them and demonstrate green performance to stakeholders. IREM® saw a need for a new sustainability certification program, one that is attainable, affordable, meaningful, and available to three main property types—office properties, multifamily communities, and shopping centers.
