GreenForward is moving Weingarten’s sustainability practices to the next level by adding new, mandatory requirements to our landscaping scope of services. Effective immediately, any current or prospective landscaping contractor will be asked to comply with the environmentally-friendly adaptations made to the landscaping scope of services regarding irrigation, weed/pest control, fertilization, mulching, and general maintenance.
In order to better our irrigation practices, contractors will continue to test all sprinkler systems at least once a month ensuring proper spray and direction to eliminate over-spray and minimize evaporation. In a case by case situation, contractors may be asked to replace spray heads with drip systems. Also, at the request of the landlord, contractors may be required to install
As a part of the general landscape maintenance, we are asking our contractors to first make every effort to physically remove weeds rather than applying weed control products. When it becomes necessary to apply a chemical weed control product, we ask that the landscaper use a spot spray method versus a blanket application. In addition, fertilizer applications are to be based on seed type and region using the minimum recommended amount of slow-release nitrogen and phosphorus. Fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides are to be applied only by licensed technicians to ensure proper rates and prevent overcast onto hard surfaces and unnecessary run-off.
Weingarten has found that we can improve our mulching practices to take a more sustainable approach. In Florida, we have had great success in recycling landscape debris into living mulch that is placed back on property in planting beds to keep water from evaporating, control weed growth and prevent soil erosion.
Weingarten’s GreenForward program actively works to improve on our sustainability foot print. However, becoming more sustainable is only relevant if we can track our efforts; any practice implemented on a Weingarten property is required to be recorded by the contractor so we are able to monitor our sustainable practices and easily see the value created.
