The Weingarten Green Team decided that in order to start to a movement, the first step should be education. Through the GreenForward program, we have taken steps to inform Weingarten associates and the retailers at our shopping centers how they can make a sustainable impact in their community.
We first started the educational series with sustainable tips to help maximize the energy efficiency of the leased premise. These tips are categorized by GreenForward’s four main focuses including: energy management, alternative transportation, water management and recycling.

Second, we decided to hold a paper shredding and recycling event at the corporate office in Houston, TX. Associates and the community were asked to bring their personal and confidential documents to shred free of charge. Additionally, participants were encouraged to witness the shredding of their documents in the Vanish Document Shredding mobile truck. Vanish Document Shredding reported an outstanding 630 lbs. of paper was recycled. Associates were challenged to watch a video showing the process and importance of paper recycling. The video demonstrated the process of turning wood chips and recycled paper into pulp for making paper.
The holiday season illuminated the fact that we could educate Weingarten associates on energy management options for holiday décor. LED lights were advised to be used as compared to incandescent bulbs. A contest was put in place for associates to send in pictures of how they used LED lighting in their holiday décor. Many enjoyed showing off their holiday spirit!

We cannot agree more with the quote above and will continue to do our part to inform and encourage our associates and retailers to incorporate environmentally-friendly practices into their everyday actions.
