Composting is a natural process of recycling organic material, such as leaves, twigs, grass clippings, and food scraps. The end result is compost, a rich material used to fertilize soil. Composting helps keep these organic materials out of landfills and turns it into a product that helps restore soil.
Organic waste accounts for more than a third of the material in California’s waste stream. The decomposition of organic material in landfills releases methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global climate change.
In the recent years California has adopted laws addressing
recycling and composting, with the goal of diverting organic material away from landfills and producing compost, fertilizers, and biofuels. Bills have called for state entities to work together on the development of composting plans; local governments to plan for sufficient composting infrastructure; and businesses to receive a tax break on the purchase of recycling equipment. California hopes to reach a 75% recycling goal by 2020.
California is a leader in composting efforts, and Weingarten Realty is committed to supporting these efforts. Weingarten Realty is
pleased to announce that we have implemented composting
