As health care costs rise, it only seems logical for companies to offer wellness programs to their associates. According to a survey by Fidelity Investments and the National Business Group on Health, nearly 90% of employers offer wellness incentives for those associates working toward a healthier lifestyle. These incentives can include prizes and/or financial rewards. Many companies offer programs based on education and awareness of the associates’ own physical condition. At Weingarten Realty, we offer a program that not only provides education and quarterly reviews of each associate’s health assessment, but also encourages participation in fitness and nutrition activities.
Weingarten Realty kicked off the Wellness Program earlier this year with breakfast provided by My Fit Foods and health assessments for each associate to track their starting stats. Recently, Madison Benefits Group gave a nutrition seminar focusing on educating associates on correct portion sizes, reading nutrition labels and eating a well-balanced diet. Each week, Weingarten Realty also offers a low impact sculpting class and yoga class held on site for all associates. Walking is strongly encouraged on all other weekdays either outside on nice weather days or inside assisted by walking DVDs.
For each event/program offered, associates receive points; at the end of the year the points will be calculated and awards will be given. The awards include gift cards, reimbursement for the wireless activity tracker, Fitbit, and paid holidays off. Points can be received for activities like keeping an exercise log, participation in a charitable event, wellness seminar attendance, participation in an organized weight loss program, blood donation, receiving a flu shot, or obtaining an annual physical.
